EPDM PTFE Gaskets

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber elastomer used in gaskets for its excellent sealing memory, temperature resistance, and resilience. In PTFE x EPDM composite gaskets, the EPDM core provides the spring-back force that maintains sealing pressure over time, helping prevent leaks even under minor ferrule misalignment or thermal cycling.

A PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene, also known as Teflon) gasket is a sealing component made from chemically inert fluoropolymer material. PTFE gaskets offer broad chemical resistance and are non-reactive, making them ideal for pharmaceutical, food, and chemical applications. However, pure PTFE gaskets are susceptible to creep and cold flow — a limitation addressed in PTFE x EPDM envelope designs.

Envelope gaskets feature a PTFE outer wrap encasing an EPDM filler core in an un-flanged design, providing flexibility for slight ferrule misalignment. Unitized gaskets use a one-piece bonded construction where PTFE is directly bonded to the EPDM core, reducing component movement and improving installation stability. Both designs combat creep and cold flow seen in PTFE-only gaskets.

Artesian Systems' EPDM PTFE gaskets have a 10-year shelf life from the cure date. For optimal longevity, store them in original packaging in a clean, dry environment at temperatures between 65°F and 85°F. Keep gaskets away from direct sunlight and at least 6 feet from electric motors to prevent premature degradation of the elastomer material.
