Inline Filters for Essential Oil Distillation

Distillation filtration is the process of removing solid particles, plant matter, waxes, or sediment from a distillate stream as it travels through the system. Inline screen gasket filters intercept particulates at a defined micron rating—5, 20, or 100 micron—without disrupting the distillation process or requiring a separate filtration vessel.

The correct micron rating depends on the particle size you need to remove. A 100-micron filter handles coarse sediment and plant debris, 20 micron removes finer particulates and waxes, and 5 micron provides the finest pre-polish filtration. Many distillers use staged filtration, starting coarse and progressing to finer screens for the cleanest output.

VITON/FKM is widely preferred for essential oil and botanical applications due to its broad chemical resistance to alcohols, ethers, glycols, and natural oils. PTFE/Teflon is ideal for aggressive or corrosive solvents. BUNA-N is a cost-effective option for petroleum derivatives and mild chemical environments. All three materials carry FDA, 3-A, and USDA compliance.

The filters are available in tri clamp sizes of 1.5", 2", 2.5", 3", 4", and 6", depending on the specific gasket material selected. This range accommodates most standard sanitary piping systems used in essential oil distillation, botanical extraction, and pharmaceutical fluid handling installations.

BUNA-N and VITON/FKM gasket screen filters operate across a wide temperature range of -40°F to +250°F, accommodating most distillation and extraction process conditions including steam cleaning and CIP cycles. PTFE gaskets carry the same general rating, though pressure ratings should be reviewed for connections 1" and above due to cold flow characteristics.
